Although developed for teaching philosophy, this presentation offers a framework and approach that can be easily adapted to any discipline where mastery of disciplinary texts plays a central role.
It is based on ongoing PAREA research on a renewed approach to teaching philosophy at the college level. This approach places reading at the heart of the practice of philosophy and responds to the challenges associated with student engagement in compulsory courses. Our team of three teachers has designed a teaching sequence that integrates philosophical reading and writing into a single learning continuum.
The theoretical model developed promotes explicit teaching strategies for reading, active and collaborative learning methods, and assessment methods based on written traces of the reflective process. This approach combines the study of philosophical texts with the development of essential attitudes, such as intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and reflexivity.
