Assessing Learning in a Performance Context
Traditionally, several different artistic disciplines have been taught in master-apprentice mode. However, as college curricula have become increasingly diversified over the years, particular problems have arisen when these disciplines are incorporated into the “menu” of certain institutions. The many challenges such integration has involved includes the sizeable one of assessing learning in a performance context. This article discusses the problem in the light of the teaching approaches and practices adopted at the CÉGEP de Drummondville by instructors in the Dance Department. The description of the various tasks carried out by the latter to determine whether students have mastered the necessary skills illustrates the difficulties involved in this type of assessment, as well as its complexity.
