Ethical Issues of College Teaching Professionals
Given that the teaching profession has much at stake relative to relational dimensions, that is relationships with others (students, colleagues, management), the authors discuss the emerging interest in professional teaching ethics. The article also looks at the question of professional ethics in relation to professional identity and the distinction between the concepts of code of ethics and ethics, with ethics being retained because it opens the door to individual experience and reflection. The authors then review their current research on ethical issues identified by college teachers in the exercise of their profession. They do this through a process that echoes ethical preoccupations in the professional world. Their research will contribute to improving our knowledge of what is ethically at stake for college teaching professionals; it will also facilitate the development of a thematic knowledge repository used as a theoretical and practical frame of reference. Given that ethical competency is a dimension of a professional teaching identity, knowing what is at stake ethically will enrich the understanding and definition of this identity.
