Novice teachers in professional integration

As novice teachers, the authors of this article are in a good position to recognize that behavioural problems in class are a major source of stress, particularly while the teacher is in the process of professional integration. With class management as a backdrop and in reviewing the literature on the subject, behavioural problems are defined in terms of lack of discipline, a problem that hinders not only teaching but also learning. The authors offer possible causes for behavioural problems and establish a classification system that is crucial in helping teachers make decisions about the necessary interventions to be carried out when a behavioural problem arises, which also enables them to work on class management. They present the main methods for basic interventions, propose an intervention model which allows for a quick analysis of different types of behavioural problems and provide a detailed analysis of the situation. Insisting on the importance for teachers to have a well defined concept of class management, they remind us that these definitions remain subjective, as they depend on individual teachers’ tolerance level, teaching values, as well as their specific expectations and requirements.
