Male students in early childhood education techniques : can we help them to complete their program of studies

On the subject of male students’ persistence in their studies, this article relates to a research designed to describe the reality of male students enrolled in Childhood education techniques (Techniques d’éducation à l’enfance/TEE) and to identify the personal and environmental factors that may impact their engagement in this program. The authors present results that put into perspective the many challenges facing these students as well as the strategies they use to overcome them. These results bring to light certain factors that seem to have a major impact on this specific clientele, including the persistent prejudices against men who want to work with children, their ability to adapt to a work environment that is dominated by women and the lack of existing male models. In terms of recommendations, the authors mention the efforts being made to recruit older students, the information and support provided for teachers, the promotion of the positive role of a male presence on child development and the fight against homophobia.
