In Quebec, the number of students dropping out of school before the end of their program of studies is a cause for concern. The first trimester is a crucial stage in the students’ college journey and the performance observed during the first session is a good predictor of subsequent performance and perseverance in school. This article presents the results of the first stage of a research by the authors currently involving 2209 students in fifth year secondary, supported by a questionnaire on how secondary level students anticipate college studies, whether positively or negatively.  The general research objective is to determine the role the emotional make-up of students plays in a successful transition from secondary to college.  Results are analyzed as a function of differences between boys and girls and the type of education selected. On the whole, the study shows that students have a fairly positive image of what awaits them in CEGEP, as a good number of them anticipate good results, while stating they are aware that it will demand more effort on their part.
