Author : Jean-Pierre Proulx, President of the Conseil supérieur de l’éducation/CSE (at the time of this conference)

Taken from a round table discussion held during the 26th AQPC symposium, this article is a summary of CSE work done on initial training and the continuing education of teachers.  Interspersed with quotations, the article tackles the major CSE guidelines:  professionalization, complexification, and the ethics of teaching.  The author describes the competency repositories developed by Performa and the CSE in 2000, underscoring the need to pursue continuing education and professional development.  The question of professional management and continuing education is discussed from a perspective of professional autonomy as regards work organization, the provision of services and professional development.  The author then emphasizes the general and collective responsibility for updating professional standards in teaching, getting approval for initial training programs, developing and managing a code of ethics.  The author concludes by pointing out that Performa’s historical standing, the pedagogical creativity of works published by college teachers and the AQPC’s reputation lead us to believe that continuing education is an integral part of the professional culture of a large number of CEGEP teachers.
