Taken from a lecture given at the 26th AQPC symposium, this article deals with ethics as seen from a teaching perspective.  The author tackles the reasons for discussing ethics at college, given that they are inherent requirements of the profession.  After shedding light on what has been done relative to ethics at other educational levels, she underscores the need for teaching ethics in the professionalization of college teaching.  She goes on to clarify the notions of morals, ethics and the code of ethics; she also defines the components of ethical competency for college teachers – through their relationship to knowledge, the students, the cultural environment and society – that will enable them to develop professionally.  She follows with an analysis of the development of ethics that are appropriate for college and provides examples of ways to increase awareness.  She concludes by stating that within the scope of professionalization, ethics demand that teachers possess an ethical awareness and display ethical competency in their interventions.
