Research and teaching: an ambidextrous practice, or self-portrait of a teacher-researcher

In this article, the author illustrates the different ways in which her multidisciplinary research work has enriched her teaching and vice versa. She relates her journey as a teacher and a researcher, revealing how she has tried to harmonize these two activities over the years, thanks for the most part to the support provided by her students, her colleges, funding organizations and her participation in research teams. The author also underscores the fact that the conditions in which research activities can be conducted at college level have a determining influence on the effect of teacher-researcher activities in the college community and on teaching itself. She also demonstrates how being a researcher can help develop an independent attitude and critical thinking in students along with what this implies in terms of deeper learning of content and questions raised by students. Using examples that establish a connection between her research work and the courses she gives in a French department, the author shows that research activities can result in a (multi)disciplinary enrichment for both teacher and students.
