Sciences at college. A review of the program necessary, but which entails pitfalls
The Science program was last revised in 1998. At that time, the scientific issues at the forefront included cloning, nuclear energy, and the mad cow disease crisis. Nowadays, the scientific issues that concern the population and the political class are different. These issues include the impact of human activity on global warming, the loss of biodiversity and the appearance of myths and false beliefs often propagated by social networks (for example, that vaccines trigger autism or that homeopathy is effective). These current scientific issues call for scientific knowledge that is more democratically distributed across the population. Thus, it would seem appropriate to review the foundations of science education in the 21st century. This is what the ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur has been working on for some time as part of their review of the Science program, in order to update the program's general goals, revamp program content and modify the timetable. The writing committee for the new program, comprised of college professors, has completed the drafting of a first version currently circulating in the network. This consultation process is very stirring up a lot of reaction, as disciplinary teams become aware of the proposed changes. The author, who is a chemistry teacher, having recently read several comments on this topic in the media and noting some excesses, wanted to provide some input in this short opinion piece.
