An Applied Example of the Flipped Classroom
Dave Bélanger, a biology teacher at the CÉGEP de Lévis-Lauzon, has often had to deal with students starting out without the proper preparation. Accordingly, he decided to experiment with the flipped classroom, a technique that affords students an opportunity to view video clips at home, thereby making certain fundamental abstract concepts more concrete and facilitating their graphic representation. The classes were then associated with case studies that allowed students to place such concepts in the context of animal biology. Although not advocating this approach as a cure-all, Bélanger did notice it had an extremely positive effect on his students’ involvement and motivation, as well as on the classroom atmosphere in general.
